Our Process

At Quanser, we're committed to meeting your technological and commercial needs, to keep you ahead of the competition.  We do this by applying our extensive experience in mechatronic design and rapid prototyping to advanced mechatronic and robotic challenges.  We draw from powerful Quanser-developed technology for fast, effective results to creatively solve high level problems and meet sophisticated requirements.

Our company is dedicated to designing advanced applications for mechatronic concepts, including the smooth integration of real-time control – mechanical, electrical and electronic. With this orientation, we provide a market understanding that far exceeds our raw engineering talent.

This means you can take advantage of current market opportunities without the need to expand your engineering team or exceed the capacity of your already-loaded R&D department.

You probably already have a powerful engineering team and the knowledge, process, and resources to bring complex products to market.  So why outsource key components of your product plan to Quanser?

In fast-paced industries, reducing time to market is crucial for long term success. Quanser can provide a resource that many such companies have not yet mastered, or develop a solution or feature for a product that is hard to produce in a short timeframe due to bandwidth limitations within the engineering team.

When your revenue growth plan is based on taking advantage all market opportunities, Quanser provides an added boost to your team.

How Does It Happen?

You come to Quanser with a requirement to incorporate a sophisticated robotic feature into a new product or an upgraded model…or simply to solve a fundamental challenge that has been eluding your team and impeding progress.

We welcome your ideas and concepts in many forms, from hand-drawn sketches to sophisticated, detailed specifications.  In any case, the Quanser team is willing to brainstorm collectively to determine the general scope of your technical challenges and commercial needs.  This process fosters close collaboration and ensures that we work well together.

It’s a competitive world but, at Quanser, integrity is more important than short-term profits.  In many cases, Quanser will invest in proof of concept or feasibility R&D work before formal agreements have been discussed.  In this way, you can be assured that we fully understand your most important needs and key technical challenges. Our contracts reflect this extra up-front effort and, in this way, mutual expectations become clear and the scope of work can be accurately documented.

Quanser’s roots reside within academia and research institutions.  We have invaluable experience understanding collaborative funding processes with Government, Academia, and other Industrial partners from our many years of relationship building. Quanser’s innovative, flexible risk-mitigation solutions are the hallmark tools of larger successful corporations, and are quite often more unique than even the technology that we develop. This is another key value we bring to your company – one that you can’t put a price tag on – our Network of Trust.

An agreement works if both parties are truly happy to sign and, at Quanser, we strive to under promise and over deliver.  Our company culture demands that we fully understand the commercial benefits to the client.  Insight into the required ROI of the project, target costs, deadlines and competitive issues are some of the tools required for our success.
Our contracts are integral to our success, and we have the experience to know what you require and expect from us, and we will communicate our expectations clearly back to you.

General specifications are included in the formal agreement draft – but we know the devil is in the details, so we spend a significant amount of time with you once the contract has been agreed to, detailing every aspect of the design into a detailed Design Goals Specification.
Activities at this stage include engineering design reviews and collaborative efforts between our teams to balance the feature/cost equation in order to maximize your profit.

Quanser specializes in sophisticated, fully-integrated mechatronic designs, and develops all products using a holistic ‘Team’ approach in which the engineers from each discipline are fully apprised on all aspects of the project.

Our clients are involved throughout the entire design process and, wherever necessary, are involved in design stage approvals.

Mechanical
Once all of the functional requirements are clearly understood, along with target cost requirements, aesthetic considerations and required level of robustness, the mechanical design process gets underway in earnest using state-of-the-art 3DOF design tools. This is followed by the rapid development of parts using Quanser’s in-house Rapid Prototyping Technology.  Designing the mechanical system in this mechatronic environment naturally means that full kinematics and dynamics are determined very early in the process.

Electro-mechanical
For all mechatronic systems, the heart of the design requires that close attention be paid to the choice of motors and encoders or other measuring sensors. Quanser has built strong relationships with motor manufacturers as well as the major electrical vendors.  This, coupled with our extensive design history, assures you will receive the ideal electro-mechanical component selection.

Electronic
Quanser’s many years of experience in mechatronic design and development, and the associated technology we have created along the way, allow for optimum electronic systems to be developed quickly.  Power requirements, along with signal conditioning and I/O needs are each analyzed carefully to achieve the desired level of performance.  Quanser’s team utilizes advanced electronic design software, and enjoys very close ties with circuit-board manufacturers.

Control Strategy
In parallel with the physical aspects of the designs, our control experts will actively work on the controller strategy from day one of the project.  Each element of your overall requirement will be incorporated into a control feature specification, and every component of the process will be developed individually before being carefully stitched together.  Since Quanser’s history is steeped in real-time control applications, and this expertise runs through the veins of our engineering team, this aspect of the design is of special importance.  Without a well considered control strategy, the best physical design in the world will operate below desired expectations.

Once all of the building blocks have been completed, we begin the process of integrating them.  All elements of the design process are conducted in parallel, and our engineers work alongside one another as a team,, with specifications well understood by the entire team.  In this way, we typically find that design integration and development of the first fully-functioning prototype is a smooth and enjoyable process.  Simply put, Quanser’s planning, teamwork and experience will save you months of development time.

With a fully-functional prototype design, our control engineers continue to work tirelessly to optimize and tweak the controllers to get the best possible performance.  It’s a matter of pride for all of us!

The last stage is to systematically test all of your desired features in preparation for an in-depth final review.

The sign-off for the design is, of course, in your hands, and you will spend time reviewing the design prototype and test results along with any other criteria agreed to at the outset of the project.  If any aspect of the design does not match your expectations, the project will continue until your concerns are resolved.

Our approach to integration with your hardware has always been to provide open systems that use standardized communication protocols.  We go to great lengths to provide your engineers with seamless integration for the OEM product that our design is destined for.
