One of the most persistent challenges we face with our students are the disconnects they experience between the complexity of their courses and a meaningful rationale within their worldview. And, unfortunately, by their age, they likely would have lost their childlike ability to simply ask “why?” Moreover, our teaching often does not make sufficient efforts to help them connect the proverbial dots.

Recently, Quanser began collaborating with key academic institutions to develop ways to help students “come to grips with their new engineering reality.” One very interesting concept dubbed the W.H.Y. Lab intends to answer the fundamentals questions of freshmen: “What do engineers do?”, “How do you do that?”, and “Why do I have to take this course?”
