The Intelligent Automation Lab is a reconfigurable collection of intelligent agents, including fixed and mobile robots, that can be used to illustrate and address challenges encountered in industrial multi-agent applications such as material handling and multiagent systems.

Students often miss the application context for topics that are covered in controls, robotics, mechatronics, autonomy, and intelligent systems. The Intelligent Automation Lab provides a meaningful and motivational context that brings these fundamental concepts to life. Through our open-architecture approach, the lab supports a huge range of concepts from low-level controllers to high-level multi-agent systems and applied AI, with a balanced approach to open-architecture that combines access to low-level systems with high-level abstraction to make coordination and task management accessible to all levels of students.

Designed for open experimentation and backed by powerful computation to allow for far-reaching course alignment that is truly multi-disciplinary, multi-year, and multi-purpose, the lab is also the only option for mapping virtual digital twin design and optimization activities to physical applications in an academically efficient manner. It can be leveraged for research, teaching, projects, and outreach.
